As the opening ceremony commenced and the speakers gave their words of advice, experience, wisdom and inspiration; excitement filled the air as eager delegates waited to begin their first sessions of GMUN.
ECOSOC had a traditional start giving each delegation an opportunity to give deliver opening speeches on water shortages; all of them stressed the point of working together as an organization to solve the issue.
SPECPOL also had a similar approach with each delegation introducing their positions on the issue of Maritime piracy. However, delegates found it difficult to keep their speeches under a minute as delegates had a lot to say. It was necessary for the chair to remind them of their time limit every few minutes.
The UN historical Security Council on the other hand went straight into a moderate caucus on the issue of Rwanda 1994. The discussion was definitely intense with delegations such as Russia, France, Rwanda and the USA disagreeing on whether neighboring countries should enforce military intervention or not. Debate was so heated to such an extent that the delegate of Djibouti requested to extend caucus for 15 minutes.
The delegate of Nigeria reminded the other delegations that they should put the interest for the people of Rwanda at heart and should refrain from attacking each other and protect the citizens of Rwanda instead.
