In Security Council to today a motion was made by the delegate of India to invite the Israeli ambassador to speak to the council and respond to any questions regarding the Gaza Flotilla crisis. The ambassador came in and took over the chair's duties and was reminded by the chair that he was out of order.
The Ambassador responded to difficult questions and suggestions. Delegate of Portugal asked why they should take away defences from the Palestinians and not the Israelis? To which he responded vaguely stating that it would prevent the increase of violence in the region.
A suggestion was made earlier in regards to the humanitarian aid given to the Palestinian people in that a list was to be created by the UN of what can or cannot enter the region. After being asked on his thoughts about it, the ambassador said “ Humanitarian aid workers can provide whatever they want as long as it is screen checked by Israeli officials before entering the region.” This statement completely goes against the suggestion proposed as Israeli officials could easily refuse the entry of goods out of pure rivalry.
Another point brought up by the delegate of France, was whether or not the Israeli government would agree to negotiate with Hamas. The ambassador said that that was unlikely to happen in the near future but possibly later and only if they agree on a change of faith, in which he later clarified to include effects such as restoring democratic rules and recognize Fatih and their opinions.
The ambassador refused to comment on the procedure with one of BBC’s correspondents after the event due to an unknown reason.
